Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How Do I Connect To the Internet?

A. It depends. If you have a wireless router, you should go to "Preferences" by clicking the little blue Apple logo at the top left of the screen and make sure "Location" is set to "Home"--if it says "School", you will likely not be able to connect.

If you have dial-up, you must go into "Preferences" and then "Network" and enter your ISPs phone number, and the user name and password of your account. Make sure you have the telephone wire plugged into the modem port, not the larger Ethernet port.

Q. I just got my laptop from the school and it's asking for a password and/or I cannot save programs or change my desktop. What should I do?

A. A few laptops may have accidentally not have had the passwords removed or the desktops unlocked--contact the school and they will take care of it for you.

Q. Can I watch DVDs or burn CDs with my iBook?

A. No, the iBooks come with a CD-ROM drive--they will not access DVDs nor allow you to burn CDs. We can upgrade your laptop to the "Combo Drive", which will allow you to watch DVD movies and burn CDs.

Q. My programs won't work, or they all disappeared--what can I do?

A. We can re-image the laptop for you, so all your programs are back like new. This takes about an hour, please call us for details.

Q. How can I speed up my iBook?

A. The easiest way to speed up your computer is to upgrade the RAM. This is inexpensive, and can be done in a few minutes.

Q. Is the iBook compatible with Microsoft Windows?

A. Sort of. You may transfer some data files (pictures, text files, music) from OS/X to Windows, but the software programs are totally different. You must purchase/download the software that is made for your operating system (in the case of the iBook, OS/X version 10.2.8 (Jaguar).

Q. My screen is very dark--I can just barely see the display--how can it be fixed?

A. The "backlight" in your LCD display has stopped working. We can repair this fairly easily, though it is not a do-it-yourself job.

Q. My battery and/or charger isn't working, what can I do?

We stock a supply of replacement batteries and chargers--simply give us a call.

Q. My screen has lines or goes all "fuzzy", what's up with that?

A. That is bad news. The usual cause of horizontal lines or a fuzzy display is that the main logic board (motherboard) has gone bad. The good news is that it is repairable, though a tad expensive. We offer a service agreement to help insure you against major repairs such as this.
